Defamation Case in Qatar
Defamation in Qatar is criminally prosecuted under several articles in Law No. 11 of 2004, specifically within Chapter Four: Calumny, Defamation and Secret Disclosure.
According to Article 326, defamation occurs when a person falsely accuses someone of a punishable crime, damages their dignity or honor, or exposes them to public contempt.
A defamation case in Qatar typically follows these steps:
- Filing a Police Report
The victim files a formal complaint at the local police station or the Public Prosecution Office. - Initial Investigation
Authorities gather preliminary information, including statements, documents, or digital evidence. - Evidence Collection
Investigators collect relevant proof such as messages, social media posts, voice recordings, or witness testimony. - Prosecutor’s Review

Article 330 addresses non-public insults or indirect defamation, with penalties of up to three months in prison or a fine of QR 1,000.
Even if the information shared is true, defamation can still be prosecuted. Article 331 criminalizes spreading private or family-related news, photos, or comments, regardless of their accuracy.
Sharing such content may lead to one year in prison and/or a QR 5,000 fine.
Article 333 protects personal privacy.
Recording conversations, taking photographs in private places, or intruding into someone’s private life without consent—especially to defame—can also result in up to one year of imprisonment and a QR 5,000 fine.
